An Analytical Autoethnography on Alchemy Symbols in Mothering Process
Kim Se-Hee

Chun Soon-Young
Abstract
In the perspective of analytic psychology, those are same processes that an alchemist can achieve psychological insight through projection towards the material and therapeutic relationship that extends consciousness through an acknowledged projection. Therefore, this study hypothesizes how the transition of a parent¡¯s projection towards a child and the transformation of a material in alchemy are identical. It represents the process of Individuation. Jungian psychology required one¡¯s own experiences for a deeper understanding. Hence, this study analyzed a researcher using the method of autoethnography with a personal experiences from parenting, own recorded dream and drawing. The paragraph is divided into researcher¡¯s depression period, early parenting period, identifying with own child and then accepting separation. Meanwhile, these experiences were compared with Medieval alchemy processes such as stages of Nigredo, Viriditas and Albedo. Essential affection and dynamics of each stage were also interpreted through the symbols in alchemical works such as dissolve, death, descent, coagulation, combustion and separation. Consequently, the substances of this study suggest that individual experiences of parenting could be expanding as part of Individuation.
